Pasta Lovers Meal at Woody's Bar & Grill at the Monterey Airport in Monterey, California by Ruth Paget

Pasta Lover Dinner at Woody’s Bar & Grill at the Monterey Airport in Monterey, California by Ruth Paget

I love going to Woody’s at the Monterey Airport for a family night out to share news about books, films, and creative projects being worked on for the weekend.

I especially like to do this while eating comfort foods like chicken pot sticker deep-fried dumplings as a starter dish. Woody’s serves these pot stickers over peppery arugula lettuce along with thick, soy-miso sauce. That is a tasty combination. 9 pot stickers come with the orders so everyone can sample on these goodies.

My husband Laurent and daughter Florence Paget both ate cups of clam chowder as their signature Monterey appetizer. I think Woody’s could can or sell this soup in a paper package that tourists could heat up in their rooms when they first arrive in their rooms.

Florence ordered the prime rib special, which is always tender and served with a twice-baked potato with butter, sour cream, and chives and seasonal steamed vegetables doused in butter. Her English beefeater ancestors would be happy the family traditions are being maintained.

Laurent ordered fish and chips, which comes with three large pieces of Pacific rock cod deep-fried in beer batter with a large order of pub fries and creamy coleslaw.

I ordered what Laurent at the last time we went to dinner at the airport: Woody’s tomato-fennel fondu pasta made with rotini pasta served in a sauce made with lightly sautéed fennel strips, shallots, and tomato slices. The sauce covered every nook and cranny of the rotini pasta and had a slight flavor of anise (licorice) from the fennel.

The pasta was topped off with burrata and Parmesan cheese and thin grilled toasts. I used the toasts to make crostini with the remaining sauce. I loved every bite of my meal and ate everything including an extra order of mashed Yukon Gold potatoes.

The Woody’s Tomato-Fennel Fondu Pasta did a wonderful job showcasing the organic produce of Monterey County and neighboring San Benito County.

If you like pasta and the flavor of anise (licorice0, I would recommend trying the tomato-fennel fondu pasta at Woody’s Bar & Grill at the Monterey Airport in Monterey, California.

Augmented Ajinomoto Chicken Teriyaki Rice Microwave Meal by Ruth Paget

Augmented Ajinomoto Chicken Teriyaki Rice Microwave Meal by Ruth Paget

On my family’s latest run to Costco in Sand City (California), we bought frozen Ajinomoto chicken teriyaki rice frozen meals (10 packages in a 1 Kilogram box) that you cook for 3 minutes a microwave.

Each chicken teriyaki rice meal bag contains:

-seasoned chicken chunks

-seasoned yellow rice

-lima beans

-peas

-carrots

-corn

This meal was pretty good alone and easy to make with the bag that had a perforate corner to take off by tearing so the meal could steam in the microwave.

I have listed a link to Ajinomoto’s website below for more product information and purchase details:

https://www.eataji.com/food-service/chicken-teriyaki/

For more umami flavor, iron, and protein, I added the following Kikkoman condiments to the chicken teriyaki rice meal:

-Oyster Sauce

Everyday Paella Recipe Created by Ruth Paget

Everyday Paella Recipe by Ruth Paget

Yield: 4 large servings

Ingredients:

For sofrito flavoring sauce:

-3 tablespoons olive oil

-1 large chopped white onion

-2 chopped garlic cloves

-1 (20-ounce) can crushed tomatoes

-1 tablespoons paella seasoning of your choice

For rice:

-1½ cups brown rice

-1 (15-ounce) can drained sweet peas

-1 (14.5-ounce) can chicken broth

For garnish:

-2 Meyer lemons cut into quarters

Steps:

1-To make the basic sofrito flavoring sauce, heat olive oil in a paella pan. Add chopped onion and garlic and sauté them for 5 minutes.

2-For the second step in making the sofrito flavoring sauce, add the crushed tomatoes and paella seasoning to the onions and garlic. Sauté this mixture for 5 minutes.

3-At the end of 5 minutes, add the brown rice and stir it to fully coat it in the sofrito flavoring sauce. Lower the heat to medium and let the rice sauté for 5 minutes.

4-Next, add in the peas and chicken broth and stir. Bring this mixture to a boil and then lower the heat to a slow simmer and cover.

5-Let the rice simmer for 40 to 45 minutes or until the liquid has evaporated and the rice is tender.

6-Garnish with Meyer lemon quarters and serve.

Note: You can use 1 cup cooked shrimp instead of peas in this recipe, canned green beans, or canned black beans.

Buen provecho!

Homemade Paella - Summer 2026 Project Completed

Made Homemade Paella - Completed Summer Project 2026

I made Valencia, Spain’s signature dish - paella - in my home with air conditioning in Salinas, California for summer projects 2026!

I finally bought a 14-inch paella pan with a cover and could do everything stovetop.  Still took an hour, but it tasted just great with squeezes of fresh Meyer lemon juice.

I will post my non-authentic recipe tomorrow.

For people who would like to buy mussels, clams, and shrimp at Phil’s Fish Market in Castroville (California) and make a true seafood paella, I would recommend the Paella cookbook by Penelope Casas.

Note: All the products used to make paella can be easily obtained in California.  The Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley has run paella classes in the past for $65 per attendee.

Hasta luego!
