Updated 305 Things to do in Monterey County California by Savvy Mom Ruth Paget

Updated 305 Things to do in Salinas and Monterey County in California by Savvy Mom Ruth Paget

Goal: 100 Activities  -  305 so far - overachiever list

I live in Monterey County California by the Pacific Ocean, which is the size of Vermont and New Hampshire put together.

Monterey County is a great place for food tourism with restaurants and markets for all sizes of budgets and many family-friendly restaurants.  I wish we had "Kids Welcome" signs at some of our restaurants to let people know there are food items for children available.

Monterey County is made up of sustainable towns that are 1/2 hour to 2 hours away from Silicon Valley and 4 hours away from Santa Barbara by car.  By plane we are 1/2 hour away from San Francisco and 1 hour away from Los Angeles.

Monterey County has science, health, agriculture and wine tourism, and arts infrastructure for weekend and one- to two-week tourism that invites repeat visits.

Our restaurants strive to deliver superlative service and meals for all budgets.  Young couples who want to splurge can try Spanish food at Esteban in Monterey and Rustica in Carmel Valley for French, Italian, and some German specialties.

We have several major sights to see now in our county that tourists from nearby cities with families or young couples might enjoy.

1 - Elkhorn Slough – Marine Estuary home to sea otters and bird sanctuary

2 - Monterey – Monterey Bay Aquarium with famed jellyfish exhibit and a live green sea turtle exhibit.

The sea turtles are on the endangered species list.  Help brainstorm solutions for its survival.

3 - Monterey – Whale, Porpoise, and Dolphin Watching Trips

5 - Soledad – Chalone Winery

6 - Carmel Valley – Talbott Vineyards

7 - Cachagua Hills – Jouillon Vineyards

(Those 3 vineyards have Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines for our climate that resembles Burgundy France inland.  Our wineries combined with our agricultural industry make Monterey County interesting for agritourism, especially as we have cool weather crops in north county and hot weather crops in south county where temperatures can go above 100 in the shade.)

8 - Pacific Grove – Brown Pelicans, Cormorants, and Seagull Territory along with Sea Lion Pup Sanctuary

9 - Pacific Grove – Natural History Museum

10 - Pacific Grove – Asilomar State Beach Trail

23 – Carmel and Salinas – De Tierra Winery (All their wines are certified organic wines) Tasting Rooms

I promote certified organic viticulture and viniculture, so fertilizer, pesticides, and herbicides do not go into ground water, tap water, and the wine I purchase.

De Tierra has an elite array of certified organic wines to taste, but I like the following wines for weekend meals:

-       Riesling to go with baked salmon, potates, and spinach sautéed in olive oil with a little nutmeg added

-       Pinot noir to go with boeuf bourguignon, coq au vin, and roast beef with potatoes, carrots, and celery served au jus

-       Chardonnay – every winery in California has Chardonnay with a touch of oak in it.  I think fish grilled in grape leaves might go well Chardonnay with coleslaw with raisins in it on the side.  An easy carbohydrate to go with this wine is Hawaiian rolls.  People who like India Pale Ale beer or Greek retsina wine might like this milder Chardonnay with grilled foods.

This center is located about 1/2 mile out of Carmel Valley Village.  The park has a walking trail, some picnic benches, a gazebo, and restrooms.  Several wineries have tasting rooms downtown and there are restaurants.

109 - Grüner Vetliner Tasting

Scheid Vineyards – Salinas Valley

Winery Tasting Room (Between Greenfield and King City off Highway 101)

Winery Tasting Room (Carmel-by-the-Sea)

Grüner Vetliner is a white wine grape grown primarily in Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic.  The wine is similar to Sauvignon Blanc.

Scheid Vineyards pairs this wine with spicy BBQ chicken wings.  I would add a salad made with organic Monterey County lettuce and blue cheese dressing to the wings.

110 – Touriga Nacional Tasting

Scheid Vineyards – Salinas Valley

Winery Tasting Room (Between Greenfield and King City)

Wine Tasting Room (Carmel-by-the-Sea)

Touriga Nacional is a Portuguese red grape used to make wine in the Douro and Dão regions of Portugal as well as port.

Scheid Vineyards recommends pairing Touriga Nacional wines with a burger.  I would add red onion slices, leaves of organic Monterey County lettuce, and a slathering of spicy Sriracha mayonnaise to the bun to go with the Touriga Nacional wine.

111 – Chardonnay Musqué Tasting

Chalone Vineyards – Salinas Valley

Soledad Tasting Room (by Pinnacles National Park)

Chardonnay Musqué is a mutation of the world’s most famous white wine grape according to wine-searcher.com.

Its principal growing regions in North America are Canada’s Niagara Peninsula and New York’s Finger Lakes.  It pairs well with lentil salad made with fresh herbs and lemon juice, which pleases vegans, vegetarians, and meat eaters alike.

112 – Pinot Blanc Tasting

-Chalone Vineyards – Salinas Valley
(Soledad Tasting Room near Pinnacles National Park)

-Scheid Vineyards - Salinas Valley

-Winery Tasting Room
(Between Greenfield and King City off Highway 101)

-Wine Tasting Room
(Carmel-by-the-Sea)

Pinot Blanc is a white wine grape that is a mutation of pinot noir.  Instead of producing a black grape, the pinot noir grape produces a white one.

Pinot Blanc is popular in Alsace (France), Austria, and Germany.  It has an aroma of citrus and apple and pairs well with fondue.

113 – Chenin Blanc Tasting

Chalone Vineyards - Salinas Valley
(Soledad Tasting Room near Pinnacles National Park)

Chenin Blanc is a white grape from the Loire Valley of France.  It is used to make the slightly sweet wines Vouvray and Montlouis in France.

You can serve it as an aperitif (cocktail) or with a white fish main dish served with a cream sauce.

114 – Rosé Tasting

Chalone – Salinas Valley – Rosé made from pinot noir

Folktale Winery – Carmel Valley – Sparkling Rosé in a photogenic setting that resembles a French château

Scheid Vineyards - Salinas Valley

Rosé conjures up images of sitting by a pool, on a deck, or dining on a patio during a hot summer day with an icy cold glass of rosé as you await a dinner of grilled hamburgers or grilled all-beef hot dogs with everything or pepperoni pizza or steamed Chinese bao dumplings with BBQ filling.

Rosé snack foods include the following:

-fresh goat cheese on sourdough flatbread or black olive and feta flat bread
-pitted black olives
-skinned almonds
-sourdough toast squares with tuna fish salad and sliced black olives
-skewered raspberries
-skewered strawberries
-watermelon slices without seeds
-quartered skewered figs
-skewered thick banana slices
-pear slices with sour cream-honey dip
-apple slices with sour cream-cinnamon-sugar dip
-skewered tangerine slices with whipped cream dip
-orange slices with sour cream-orange liqueur dip

-Kettle® Pepper and Salt Potato Chips

115 – Zinfandel Tasting

Chalone – Salinas Valley

Zinfandel, also known as Primitivo in Italy and Crijenak and Kastelanski in Croatia, is a red grape whose wine is semi-sweet.

Some dishes that go well with Zinfandel wine follow:

-braised and pulled pork with North Carolina BBQ sauce.  You can make pulled pork sandwiches with this dish.  Alvarado Street Brewery used to have it on their menu and served it with sweet pickle and fries.  I would add coleslaw to round out the meal.

-braised pork with prunes

-Japanese tonkatsu pork (like Wiener Schnitzel sliced cutlets) with curry sauce

116 - Fort Ord National Monument Hike

Off Highway 68 by the Laurales Grade to Carmel Valley Village.

117 - Cabernet Sauvignon Tasting

Hahn Family Wines - River Road Wineries - Smith and Hook Label

Cabernet Sauvignon is the main red grape used in Bordeaux red wines.  My favorite dish to eat with a Bordeaux red is grilled confit de canard (duck confit) with steamed French green beans and slices of red skin potatoes.

118 - Pinot Noir Tasting

Chalone - Salinas Valley

Hahn Family Wines - River Road Wineries - SLH Gabrielle Pinot Noit

Burgundy beef or Coq au Vin are the classic dishes that go with pinot noir.  I like gratin daupinois to go with this dish - slices of potato baked with a little garlic, creme fraiche, and grated Swiss cheese with butter dabs to form pools on top of it when it's finished baking.

119 - Chardonnay Tasting

Chalone - Salinas Valley

Gambas al ajillo (Spanish garlic shrimp) go great with chardonnay.  They taste briny, garlicky, and fresh with chopped parsley.

120 - Tassajara Zen Mountain Center

Cachagua Hills outside Carmel Valley Village - this is the first Zen Center set up in the United States.  It is a meditation and hot springs retreat.  If you are interested in this, contact the center.  They might be able to arrange a tour of the facilities, but it is not really a public facility.  However, they have a photogenic gate.

Turkish Festival 101 - Part 1 - by Savvy Mom Ruth Paget

Turkish Festival 101 - Part 1 - by Savvy Mom Ruth Paget

The first article I wrote for The Monterey County (CA) Weekly (Circulation: 200,000) was about the Turkish Festival held on the Monterey Wharf.  I felt like I was finally putting together a lot of esoteric knowledge when I put this article together.

I have modified the article, but the content remains:

Tapestry of Turkey

I’ll admit it!!  The real reason I want to go to the Turkish Arts and Culture Festival this weekend is to admire the belly dancers.  I love the sheer veils, sequined tops outlined with gold coins, finger cymbals, and sinuous movements of this art form that began as a ritual dance representing childbirth in a region extending from Morocco to Turkey.

There are other delightful distractions at the Turkish festival:

-falling into a trance as I listen to Sahin Gunsel sing Turkish love songs while he plays the oud

-tapping my feet and clapping my hands as I watch folk dancers in brightly colored costumes

-seeing what Turkish towns look like at the Orhan Coplu art exhibit

I also love sampling Turkish food made by women who learn to cook without cookbooks and measures.  Amazingly, the chefs at the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, the hub of the 600-year-old Ottoman Empire, operated on the same principle.

An Ottoman chef threw out Empress Eugénie’s French chef who was seeking an eggplant purée recipe for his sovereign.  The French disconcerted everyone with his weights and measures.

The Ottoman chef said, “An Imperial chef cooks with his feelings, his eyes, his nose…”

So, the empress never ate Turkish food again unlike the fortunate souls, who will attend the Turkish festival this weekend.

The succulent offerings at the Turkish Festival include:

-doner kebap – slices of ground lamb seasoned with garlic that resembles Greek gyros and Lebanese Syrian schwarma

-adana kebap – ground lamb meatballs seasoned with garlic, onion, cumin, and red pepper (Red pepper is popular in southern Turkey.)

-borek – buttery phyllo crust pie filled with creamy cheese and spinach

-dolmas – grape leaves stuffed with rice and seasoned with mint in lemon sauce

-musakka – baked slices of layered eggplant in tomato sauce

-kisir – cracked wheat salad with parsley, tomato, and onion and lemon juice and olive oil dressing

-cucik – yogurt and garlic sauce that goes well with doner kebap

-piyaz – white kidney bean salad seasoned with parsley, dill, mint, and onions that is topped off with lemon and oil dressing

-sheperd salad – a tomato, onion, and cucumber dish made with the freshest vegetables available

-baklava – a dessert made of phyllo pastry and ground walnuts and honey

End of Part 1.

To be continued…

Kindergarten Skills to Master by Savvy Mom Ruth Paget

Kindergarten Skills to Master by Savvy Mom Ruth Paget

When I lived in Wisconsin children attended ½ day kindergarten.  I worked as a substitute teacher at my daughter’s preschool until I was offered a full-time position.

I went back to school to obtain an Early Childhood Education certificate from Madison College and studied French literature for children and francophone children’s culture in former French colonies at Edgewood College.

I taught the following skills to children in addition to themed activities for literature, math, and social studies found in preschool management books.  I let parents know what classroom goals were with a daily activity sheet posted on a weekly basis and asked them to do homework in the following areas to reinforce what they were learning at school:

1-Tying shoes so that they stay securely fastened

2-Telling time – knowing hours, quarters, half, minutes, am, and pm

3-Left and right difference

4-East, West, North, and South directions using a compass and paper plate compasses

5-Painting knowledge – color names, mixing primary colors to make secondary colors, color wheel work, adding in black and white

6-Fabric book work to learn qualities of different fabrics, their names, and care

7-Hoola hoop to music to build abdominal muscles

8-Play Twister to learn colors

9-Sing the alphabet song

10-Count 1 – 100

11- Play Concentration with two decks of playing cards to memorize numbers 1 – 1- and build matching skills

12-Write numbers 0 – 10

13-Write alphabet to strengthen fingers

14-Use silverware to eat like an American and a European

15-Learn to use chopsticks – Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese

16 - Learn to button a coat or shirt

17 - Learn to zip up a coat

These activities take time, but children can master them with repetition and gentle encouragement by parents and teachers alike.

Fundraiser Ideas for Arts Organizations and "gig" Ideas for Speakers by Savvy Mom Ruth Paget

Fundraiser Ideas for Arts Organizations by Savvy Mom Ruth Paget

Arts organizations might wish to expand their traditional fundraising methods to untapped audiences with fundraising lectures that are introductions to various kinds of “arts” in their communities and beyond.

These lectures could be held in venues such as:

-the arts center itself

-shopping mall community rooms

-restaurant private rooms with a box lunch and lecture format

-city auditoriums

-grange facilities

-condominium community rooms

-library community rooms

Building managers can let you know if the room is zoned for fundraising activities for non-profit organizations.

The session itself could be a 1-hour lecture with slideshow with ½ hour before and after the session for “meet and greet.”

The tickets should be the money for the fundraiser with extra donation and idea solicitation forms left out on tables by the entrances with volunteers to answer questions and/or take memberships or donations.

Using the community I live in – Monterey County California – these are some of the ideas that I think various cities in our county might be interested in for fundraising:

-Spanish adobe architecture and garden design

-Spanish Christmas posadas explanation and slideshow

-English garden design at various points around California’s first capital in the city of Monterey

-English domestic architectural styles around Monterey Country

-Rose gardens around the world and varieties of rose

-Quincenería (16th birthday) traditions including mariachi music demonstration

-Sicilian puppet shows

-Portuguese fado singing

-Spanish guitar concerts

-Messiah choir singing with Christmas market

-Christmas carol singing with market

-Russian Easter celebrations and slideshow of St. Isaac’s in St Petersburg

-Mexican landscape architecture

-Western fashion – 1960s to the present

-Japanese bansai tree technqiues

-Japanese ikebana

-kimono decoration through the decades

-tea ceremony essentials

-Chinese bronze vessels through the millennia

-Tibetan monastic schools art and symbols

-Theatre overview –
US, England, France, Spain, Germany, and Japan in separate lectures

-Opera overview –
Italian by city and French

-Arabic alphabet and calligraphy styles

Fundraising ideas for organizations and gig ideas for speakers for the weekend!
