In the book Champagne Taittinger by Claude Taittinger (159 pages), Taittinger shares some of the luxury branding strategies that the historical champagne house has developed to capitalize on their already famous site. 

Some of these branding strategies include: 

-serving state dinners to Queen Elizabeth II and French president Jacques Chirac 

-commemorating château meals for statesmen and visiting businessmen alike with formal printed menus

-renting the headquarters château out for weddings

-hosting harvest dinner “cochelet” overseas to expand export markets 

-researching the family tree and publishing it in the book. 

The family’s roots extend back to the 16th century in Austria where their name was Tetinger. The family moved to Lorraine, which became French along with the family name when Lorraine became part of France. 

-promotes the creation of designer decorated bottles by artists

The Strategic Importance of France’s Canals by Ruth Paget

I was looking through a French canal boat tour guide from2002 for the Loire Nivernais (Nevers Region) and began researching how the major canals of France connect the country to its surrounding oceans.

These canals are famous with sightseers today and still retain commercial and defensive significance. 

For instance, the Canal de Bourgogne and the Canal de Briaire connect the Seine River and the Rhône River basins via the Saône River creating a continuous North-South waterway across France that connects the Mediterranean Sea with the English Channel. 

(The Canal de Bourgogne also connects to the Yonne River, a tributary of the Seine River at Migennes, which leads to the Saône River at Saint-Jean-de-Cosne and eventually the Rhône River.) 

The Canal de Briaire and the Canal de Loing (built in 1604) connect the Loire River to the Saône River at Saint-Mammès. Once you are on the Saône River, it is easy to navigate to the Rhône River and then go north to the English Channel or south to the Mediterranean Sea. 

In the southwest, the Garonne River flows by Bordeaux and Toulouse. At Toulouse, boats can take the Canal du Midi, also called the Canal de Deux Mers, which ends at the Etang de Thau, a saltwater lagoon next to the Mediterranean port city of Sète. 

The Canal du Midi links the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea without having to go around Spain. (You can also use canals to follow the Garonne River to the Rhône River.) 

Finally, there is 600 miles of networked canals in Brittany in northwest France that link Brittany to the Atlantic Ocean and the English Channel. 

These French canals can move produce, wine, and other merchandise throughout France to keep even small village markets like the two I went to with my mother-in-law in St.-Etienne-de-Montluc outside Nantes and Montlouis-sur-Loire outside Tours well-stocked in all seasons. For this reason alone, the canals of France greatly contribute to the comfortable lifestyle of France. 

For tourists, there is the thrill of going through locks and learning about all the little towns along the way.

Note: Chicago could offer canal cruises as well. The Chicago River flows by canal to the Des Plaines River, which flows into the Illinois River and eventually the Mississippi River by Peoria, Illinois.

Japanese Host Mom Economics by Ruth Paget 

I bought the cookbook Everyday Harumi by Harumi Kurihara (available on Amazon Kindle), because the recipes reminded me of the food my Japanese host mom made when I was an exchange student in 1980. Even as a teenager, I could see that she was good with money, food, and nutrition. 

My Japanese host mom cooked for 11 people daily when I lived with the family in Toyonaka City outside Osaka, Japan. This number included my host dad and his co construction company crew workers, one set of grandparents, Okaasan and her three daughters, and me. 

Okaasan was a nurse before getting married and her three daughters studied nursing at a boarding school on the island of Shikoku south of Honshu. After marriage, she helped my Japanese host dad run the family construction business. I am thankful that okaasan’s management skills made it possible for me to live in Japan as a high school exchange student with Youth for Understanding. 

I had trouble getting used to Japanese food at first, but stuck with eating it, so I would be considered a good diplomat. I actually gained some weight by the time I left and liked salty pickled plums and crunchy nori seaweed by the end of my stay.

I want to go through how okaasan organized summer meals in a home without air conditioning during extremely hot summer days where it would already be 85 degrees out at 7:30 am and threatening tropical rain. (Japan’s southern island of Kyushu experiences monsoon weather.) 

The following are the typical weekday menus okaasan prepared for my Japanese host sisters and me during the week: 

Breakfast: 

-miso soup with tofu and seaweed 

-two bowls of cold, sticky rice mixed with lukewarm tea that we drank like soup

-tsukemono and sunomono pickles 

-yamaki dried anchovies

Lunch: 

-udon soup at a restaurant to beat the heat or

-omelet made with snipped chives and sprinkled with soy sauce, salad with mayonnaise, tsukemono and sunomono pickles, and rice at home 

Dinner: 

Okaasan set out tabletop electric grills so people could grill their own teriyaki chicken and sometimes beef. 

We also grilled fish and seafood without marinade and dipped it in ponzu sauce, s sweet, citrusy soy sauce dip. 

We ate these items with tsukeomono and sunomono pickles and rice. 

(I love the smell of hot rice when a rice cooker is first opened.) 

Sometimes we would go to the grocery store after eating and buy ice cream cones.

I liked the routine meals, because it freed up my time to do exchange student activities like learn origami, go for neighborhood walks, and make ikebana bouquets.

IPA Tourism on California’s Central Coast by Ruth Paget 

I have enjoyed reading about travelers who visit whisky distilleries in Scotland in magazine articles over the years and was inspired to put together similar information about IPA (India Pale Ale) tourism on California’s Central Coast for people who live in this region or who visit from outside the area. 

The following breweries produce IPA and some have brewpubs where you can enjoy an assortment of IPAs and food that pairs well with this bitter brew: 

-Alvarado Street Brewery (Salinas and Monterey) 

-Other Brother Brewery (Seaside) 

-Peter B’s (Monterey) 

-Firestone Walker (Paso Robles)

-Solvang Brewery Company (Solvang) 

A little farther away from the Central Coast are the historic breweries below: 

-Anchor Steam Brewery (San Francisco)

-Sierra Nevada (Chico) 

-Lagunitas (Petaluma)

I referred to the book IPA: A Legend In Our Own Time by Roger Protz for information on the IPA production, history, and a listing of some of the world’s most famous IPA brands and their products. 

IPA is characterized by its bitter flavor from hops. Californian producers primarily use hops from the following states: 

-Washington State (Yakima Valley) 

-Oregon (Willamette Valley) 

-Idaho (Treasure Valley and Kootenai Valley) 

IPA has its origins in Pale Ale that was drunk in the English countryside by aristocrats in the 17th and 18th centuries to avoid importing French wines during times of warfare with France. In the 19th century, 

George Hodgson began shipping pale ale to England’s colony in India giving rise to the India Pale Ale style and trade. Ships with India Pale Ale went to India and came back laden with tea, spices, silk, and other luxury goods for English aristocrats. 

(Three generations of Hodgsons organized and popularized the trade in India Pale Ale (George, Mark, and Frederick). This information is of interest to me personally. One of my great-grandmothers was a Hodgson, who may be a cousin of George Hodgson, who organized the IPA trade. There is a detailed history along with paintings and photographs of the Hodgson Brewery in the book by Protz.) 

To finish up with IPA tourism based in California’s Central Coast, I would suggest trying the following dishes that highlight food products from the Central Coast: 

-fish and chips made with Pacific rock cod and organic potatoes from the Salinas Valley. I also like to order a creamy coleslaw to go with the fish and chips, if it is available. 

-Swiss cheese and mushroom topped burgers and fries made with Point Reyes cheese and mushrooms from Monterey County or Oregon

-a simple BLT made with thick-cut, hickory smoked bacon from San Benito County with organic lettuce and tomato and mustard-mayonnaise and fries 

-pizza made with spent grain from beer-making and spicy pepperoni 

-Reuben sandwiches made with corned beer, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Thousand Island dressing on marbled rye toast (From the East Coast sandwich tradition, but tastes very good with IPAs)

Note: Every state in the the US could organize similar IPA tourism all throughout the year.  And, remember you need clean water to make IPA beer, so IPA tourism is eco-tourism, especially if you organize recycling of used cans and bottles.

Note: An IPA is a great choice for a 4th of July barbecu with macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, potato salad, watermelon, corn on the cob, and watermelon rind pickles.

I saw an announcement for an Audobon hike at Rana Creek Preserve in Carmel Valley on the Monterey County Weekly’s Online Community Calendar and liked the idea of bird watching, but not the two-mile hike. 

However, the dense oak forest by Rana Creek is similar to the forest surrounding Carmel Valley Village as well. There is even a restaurant where you can sit on an outdoor terrace right by the woods and do some bird watching as you eat chicken enchiladas or other delicious Mexican food at the Plaza Linda Restaurant. 

(Plaza Linda is located at the eastern end of the Village along Carmel Valley Road before it mounts into the mountains toward Cachuaga.) 

The trees you can see from Plaza Linda’s terrace are oak. They are an ecosystem for birds who occupy the tree’s canopy above the restaurant. 

Three bird species of note for their colorful plumage (feathers) include:  

-yellow-billed magpies 

-goldfinches

 -orioles 

The following details will allow you to identify these birds easily: 

*yellow-billed magpies 

-yellow bills -black and white songbird 

-feeds on insects, seeds, and acorns from oak trees 

-yellow-billed magpies are only found in Carmel Valley, California 

*goldfinches 

-called a wild canary 

-the male is bright yellow and black in summer. The male turns gray in winter -seed eaters

-goldfinches especially like thistle seeds, sunflower seeds, and dandelion seeds 

*orioles

-black, yellow, and red plumage 

-red-orange chest 

-feeds on insects, fruit, and nectar -songbirds

Gyoza Dumplings - Summer 2026 Easy Meal Suggested by Ruth Paget

Frozen gyoza are an easy baked meal that come with dipping sauce.  Adding a squirt of Kewpie mayonnaise and some snipped green onions makes these taste even better!

You can find gyoza at the more than 100 H Marts located across the United States at their website below (click to get the store locator):

All you do for gyoza is line a baking sheet with parchment paper and bake.  Teens can make these for busy parents. 

They are usually filled with cabbage, onions, and carrots and come with a soy dipping sauce.  Some come with a pork filling, so check ingredients if you have allergies or dietary preferences.

I think our local Costco also carries gyoza and Chinese potstickers as well.

Gyoza are a simple meal to make and most bags of them are large.

They are perfect for trying an Asian comfort food at home without spending too much money.

Great Depression Beater Cookbook Review by Ruth Paget 

The Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook was published in 1930 and helped the Midwestern United States with its short summers and long, icy winters survive the Great Depression and World War II using the farm resources of the country. 

There are 1,200 recipes in the cookbook with excellent recipes for meat, grilling, canning and preserving summer’s bounty, and dessert recipes galore for cakes, pies, and cookies. 

You can identify someone as Midwestern in time of crisis for want to dunk the following pantry cookies in tea, coffee, or milk:

-sugar cookies 

-oatmeal cookies 

-peanut butter cookies 

-peanut blossoms (peanut butter cookies baked with a Hershey Kiss in the center) 

-chocolate chip cookies 

I would add non-dunkable lemon bar cookies to this list as well. 

My favorite section of the book is devoted to bread. I like 00 flour for its high protein content, but this flour used for pizza dough does make bread dense. About 1/3 of the book is devoted to bread. 

The following list of breads I have made using the book's recipes seems long, but it is the tip of the iceberg iof recipes n the cookbook: 

-sourdough – The Midwest prefers yeast breads, but makes sourdough as an exotic bread from San Francisco 

-onion and olive focaccia – this flatbread pizza also tastes good with herbs and grated gruyère as well. 

-pepper-cheese bread 

-Dinner rolls with photos to know how to form the basic shapes for baking for butterhorns (croissants), Parker House rolls, rosettes, and clover leaf rolls 

-breadsticks 

-brioche 

-banana-walnut 

-zucchini bread 

-nut bread 

-pumpkin bread (I also make applesauce bread with this same recipe) 

-lemon bread 

-raisin-carrot bread 

-corn bread 

-cheddar bread 

The following are cakes that I bake in a loaf pan and eat like bread:  

-spice cake 

-apple cake 

-carrot cake 

-banana cake 

-banana nutroll 

The Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook currently sells for $10.99 for a paperback version with 1,200 recipes. I like its recipes for that read like chemistry experiment instructions, have nutritional information printed at the end of them, and provide photographs for some of the trickier recipes. 

This cookbook has many recipes using flour and corn flour, reflecting Midwestern agricultural staples. If you like and are not allergic to these products, there are many recipes in this cookbook that are relatively low-cost to prepare at home that make the book a good purchase.

Personal Chef Resource Book on Mediterranean Food Review by Ruth Paget 

Milk Street Tuesday Nights Mediterranean by Christopher Kimball (283 pages) is a handy reference book for personal chefs, who would like to offer dishes from across the Mediterranean in their skill portfolio. 

The left pages of the book show large photos of the finished dish, which give presentation ideas for the dish as well as clear photos of the ingredients for clients who would like to remove or add items to a dish. 

The right page provides the recipe name, ingredients, and step-by-step instructions. Potential clients can see what exactly goes in the dish and make any adjustments for dietary and/or religious preference. 

Kimball separates the recipes into chapters with the following accurate descriptions: 

-fast 

-faster 

-fastest 

-salad suppers

-hearty vegetarian 

-supper soups 

-flat and folded 

All the book’s recipes can be made with produce from farmers’ markets. (There are 6 farmers’ markets in Salinas, California alone throughout the week.) Recipes that can be easily made with ingredients from farmers’ markets include: 

-rigatoni with artichokes, basil leaves, and pecorino cheese 

-pasta with crumbled Italian sausage, tomatoes, and eggplant 

-fennel-steamed salmon served with olives and caper vinaigrette 

-seared pork chops with fennel and herb salad

Running a Neapolitan Pizzeria Basics Review by Ruth Paget

Running a Pizzeria Basics Review by Ruth Paget 

Before he was a Food Network personality and owner of a Micheli-starred restaurant, Mario Batali owned a pizzeria in Greenwich Village in New York City. 

His book Molto Gusto shares his experience gained in organizing the food offerings that go beyond Neapolitan pizza at this pizzeria and offer some insight into what to offer on a pizzeria menu. 

Batali organizes his book into the following chapters: 

-vegetable antipasti 

-seafood and meat antipasti 

-cheese -insalata 

-pasta, 

-pizza 

-gelato and sorbetto 

As I read through these chapters, I thought that if you could master making these items, sourcing ingredients, and keeping a steady inventory, you could run a successful pizzeria like Batali did and give yourself the cash necessary to finance a more formal restaurant. 

Batali like most Italians stresses the importance of buying local, organic produce at farmers’ markets for the best results. Batali suggests vegetable antipasti like the following to take advantage of spring and summer bounty:

-spring peas with mint, red onion, red wine vinaigrette, and sea salt 

-shaved fresh asparagus with Parmesan cheese, lemon juice, olive oil, and sea salt 

-green beans with charred onions, balsamic vinegar, orange juice, olive oil, and sea salt 

-cherry tomatoes with crème fraîche and chives 

-radishes with butter and salt 

Batali lists 11 kinds of meat antipasti. Charcuterie is often eaten by Italians so they do not have to heat up the home to make meals. (The Columbus brand at Costco and Nob Hill makes it easy to sample Italian charcuterie in Salinas, California.) 

In the cheese chapter, Batali lists many kinds of cheese that can be eaten alone, shaved on salads, or grated on dishes to be baked. The cheese in the book is photographed, identified, and described for the following varieties:

-Romana made with tomatoes, olive oil, anchovy fillets, capers, chile pepper, and mozzarella  -Napoletana made with tomatoes, olive oil, anchovy fillets, capers, and Gaeta olive 

-Quatro Formaggi made with tomatoes, mozzarella, Taleggio, cacao di Roma, and Parmigiano-Reggiano 

-Quattro Staggioni made with tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, Taleggio, cacao di Roma, and Parmigiano-Reggiano 

You can eat very well as a family using recipes in Molto Gusto by Mario Batali and learn the skills needed to work in a pizzeria or maybe one day run or own a pizzeria. 

Molto Gusto by Mario Batali provides much insightful information into the food of Italy, especially Naples, making it a good reference for lovers of Italy as well as cooks.

Majesty Palms for $40 for Costco Members by Ruth Paget

While doing weekly marketing with my husband Laurent and daughter Florence Paget, I saw that Costco is selling Majesty Palms for $49.99 outside the entrance. 

The plants stand about 7 feet tall at the store, but can grow to 10 to 15 feet high according to the Costco website. The Majesty Palm has feathery leaves that move easily in the direction of wind. 

The Costco Majesty Palms come in white container pots and are meant for indoors. The Costco Majesty Palms take in the carbon dioxide that humans breathe out and “exhale” oxygen to a room, making their presence more than decorative.

A Glimpse into Imperial Austria by Ruth Paget 

To Set Before the King: Katharina Schratt’s Festive Recipes is an annotated original source material of loosely written recipes prepared for Emperor Franz Joseph 1 of Austria and King of Hungary by Katharina Schratt, the lead actress of the Court Theatre Company in Vienna. 

Katharina prepared the 146 appetizers and main dishes and 158 dessert dishes for not only the Emperor, but also crowned heads of state, leading industrialists, and diplomats. Schratt reported the details of her luncheons with these notables of the world to the Emperor during weekly lunches and kaffee klatsches with him. 

The recipes themselves are notes written with no measures and vague directions. The recipes do provide a privileged glimpse into an elite larder which has the ingredients for sophisticated dishes as well as comfort foods of the Habsburg Empire. 

The recipes are not in alphabetical order, but the book has an index and numbers the recipes for quick reference. In the 21st century, it is easy to look up precise recipes for these dishes online. 

I am familiar with three of the recipes from Schratt’s recipe list thanks to living in Stuttgart (Germany), Madison (Wisconsin), and Detroit (Michigan): 

Recipe #83 – Swabian Spätzle Noodles 

These noodles are made with flour, eggs, salt, and water that is formed into an elastic dough. The dough is rolled out into long, narrow strips that are shaved into boiling water. When cooked, they are served with butter and parsley. 

I first ate spätzle at a restaurant in Madison (Wisconsin) that was located in a converted train station. (I think the restaurant was called The Depot.) 

I liked eating a plate of spätzle followed by vegetable soup in winter and salad in summer. The restaurant also served charcuterie boards and cheese boards.  Dessert may have been seasonal fruit salad. (American has many train depots in little country towns that could easily offer this type of menu.  In California, Grange Halls might be interested in this kind of restaurant as well.)

Spätzle are originally from Swabia, the region around Stuttgart, Germany. I did make some when I lived in Germany, but called them maltagliatelle (badly made tagliatelle in Italian). The ingredients are the same as Italian tagliatelle and flour gnocchi and English Yorkshire pudding.

Recipe #32 Fritto Misto 

You know these recipes are meant for the king when you consider that Austria is landlocked and far from the sea. This dish calls for an abundance of lightly floured seafood deep-fried in new oil no doubt. 

Recipe #138 Hungarian Cabbage Rolls  

These are different from Polish cabbage rolls, but equally good. 

For this recipe, you make a roux and add it to sauerkraut, which is placed in the bottom of a baking dish. Then, you blanch cabbage leaves and pull them apart. 

The cabbage leaves are stuffed with chopped port, onions, parsley, salt, and eggs. The rolls are placed on top of the sauerkraut. Cream mixed with paprika is poured over the rolls with a few strips of bacon placed on top of the cream. The rolls are baked and served piping hot. 

Finally, rice sausages seem to be the potato chips of the Habsburg Empire and are a new recipe for me that works well in California, which grows rice.  

Recipe #27 Rice Sausages 

Cook rice in milk, salt it, and allow it to cool. Form sausages out of the rice and fry them.

I signed up for the membership app on Raley’s, the parent company for Nob Hill and Bel Air Supermarkets. 

When you pay in the store, you enter your phone number on a key pad at the register to link to your account with electronic coupons you clipped prior to your visit. These coupons are automatically deducted from your bill once your phone number is entered. 

Some items that I have received coupons for that I include in my regular grocery shopping include: 

-organic radishes 

-shredded carrots 

-Casa Sanchez roasted vegetable salsa 

-various artisanal breads (thank you San Francisco for promoting artisanal bread and keeping the tradition alive)

I love cheese, but this item rarely has coupons. 

I also use the Nob Hill app to organize shopping lists and can total how much a list costs before taxes.

I like using the Raley’s app for Nob Hill, because I have found good prices on items I use and suggestions for similar items that I might also like.

Mediterranean Vegetarian Meal at Pèppoli Café in Spanish Bay at Pebble Beach, California by Ruth Paget

Mediterranean Vegetarian Meal at Pèppoli Café in Spanish Bay at Pebble Beach, California by Ruth Paget  

To celebrate Memorial Day, my husband Laurent, daughter Florence Paget, and I went to lunch at Pèppoli Café, now open in afternoons, in Spanish Bay at Pebble Beach California. 

We sat on the terrace at a table with a fire pit in the middle, which we, of course, had lighted despite a brisk wind off the Pacific. It made dining a little edgy with flames flickering around. 

We began our meal with the warm goat and olive appetizer that comes with grilled toast rods. The Pebble Beach Company has a herd of goats (about 100 goats) that you can see grazing around Pebble Beach throughout the year. (They are natural lawn mowers for forest floors.) I assumed the warm goat cheese came from the milk of this herd. 

In any case, the goat cheese arrived warm and melting in a bath of extra virgin olive oil with sautéed slices of red bell peppers to drape over the grilled toast. Just that was pretty great, but the real bonus was a ramekin dish full of warm olive oil with pitted Gaeta (maybe Kalamata) black olives, small green Spanish manzanilla olives, and small black French Niçoise olives with a whole spicy red pepper. 

The small manzanilla and small Niçoise olives have pits so be careful biting down on them. The hot pepper gave the olives a little zing, which I found delicious. 

As my main dish, I ordered eggplant parmigiana (eggplant Parmesan) that was served on a generous bed of lumache (pronounce loo-ma-kay) pasta in the form of a snail with tomato sauce. This a a simple description for a somewhat elaborate dish. 

The lumache pasta at the bottom of the dish was covered with tomato sauce made with garlic, olive oil, San Marzano tomatoes, sun-dried tomato paste, fresh basil, and fresh oregano that had cooked for several hours. The flavor is concentrated with pronounced sun-dried tomato and oregano flavors. This sauce is different from the Marinara sauce on top of the eggplant slices and provided a nice flavor contrast. 

The eggplant slices in the eggplant parmgiana is sliced and dunked in flour, beaten eggs, and a breadcrumb and Parmesan mixture before sautéing. The thick crust on the eggplant made me think that it had been double dipped before sautéed. 

Once the eggplant was ready, mozzarella was placed on the pasta. The eggplant slices went on top of this. Marinara sauce made with garlic, olive, basil leaves, and salt that is cooked for a shorter time than the sauce on the lumache pasta went on top of the eggplant slices with parmesan grated on top. 

Finally, the chef placed slices of mozzarella di bufala on top of everything before running it under the broiler. This steaming and oozing delight tasted just great with the views of ocean on the terrace. 

I was very happy with the Mediterranean vegetarian meal I ate at Pèppoli Café at Pebble Beach, California and think both vegetarians (lacto-ovo vegetarians) and Italian culture lovers would like the elaborate eggplant parmigiana with ocean views from Pèppoli Café.

Monterey Bonsai Festival on June 7, 2026 in Seaside, California reposted by Ruth Paget

The Monterey County Weekly Online Community Calendar announces the 63rd Annual Monterey Bonsai Club Festival at the Monterey Buddhist Temple in Seaside, California.

Bonsai is the Japanese art of growing and trimming miniature trees that resemble fully grown ones.

Bonsai Master Teacher Katsumi Kinoshita will do a demonstration.  There will be a raffle and trees for sale at this enchanting multicultural event as well.

Curry Shrimp at Golden Star Chinese Restaurant in Salinas, California by Ruth Paget

I learned to love curry vegetables from my family’s Japanese exchange student Yumiko. She made curry with potatoes, carrots, and frozen peas, which Michigan had in abundance when I was in high school in Detroit.

Now that I live in Salinas (California), I can easily add shrimp from nearby Moss Landing fishing boats to seasonal vegetables at Golden Star Chinese Restaurant for a delicious dinner with an ingredient that has become a pan-Asian staple. 

Curry in India is really a spice blend made from whole roasted spices that are ground. This spice blend is called a garam masala. The English called garam masala curry. 

The curry name stuck and is used in Southeast for curry pastes. East Asia tends to use curry pastes even though they know how to make curry from spice blends with a corn starch slurry, if needed. 

Golden Star Chinese Restaurant has its own approach to the curry shrimp I love so well, especially since they have access to a cornucopia of seasonal vegetables. For a recent delivery order in spring, the curry shrimp came with the following vegetables: 

-onions 

-green peppers 

-broccoli 

-cauliflower 

-carrots

-mushrooms 

I referred to the Spruce Easts website for general information on how to put Chinese curry shrimp together, which describes the dish and should give home cooks a better idea of how to put curry shrimp together in a step-by-step fashion: 

1-soak shrimp with water, rinse, and dry 

2-blanch hardier vegetables in boiling water till tender crisp. The vegetable colors should remain bright. Place vegetables in cold water to stop their cooking and drain. 

3-heat oil a wok and add ginger as the aromatic for this dish and stir-fry. Add shrimp and stir-fry till pink. Remove the shrimp from the wok. 

4-Add more oil to the wok and heat. Add curry paste. Add onions and green peppers as your seasoning vegetables first. Follow with the rest of your vegetables in order of those with a longer cooking time first. 

5-when the vegetables are tender, add the shrimp back into the wok and heat till blazing hot. 

6-splash in rice wine or sherry and serve hot with rice on the side.

Solvang Viking Museum - 2 Replica Viking Ships on View reposted by Ruth Paget

Vacationers looking for an overnight recharge trip with a cultural outing to write about might be interested in the Solvang Viking Museum on California’s Central Coast.

One of the current exhibitions is about Viking ships.  Two reproduction ships the Snorri and Godfried are on view.

There is a weapons exhibit for lovers of Norse myths as well.

Minecraft players would probably find the whole town interesting and the Viking restaurants.

Savory and Stylish Salmon Criollo at Villa Azteca in Salinas, California by Ruth Paget 

For my daughter Florence Paget’s birthday, my husband Laurent and I offered her a celebratory meal at Villa Azteca in downtown Salinas, California. 

We began our meal with guacamole salad – mashed avocado with red bell pepper squares and chopped cilantro mixed in. I like the black, volcanic stone dishes that the guacamole comes in. As we ate the guacamole, I admired the milagro (miracle) cross collection hung on the wall by the entryway. 

Florence and Laurent ordered steaks while I ordered a heart-healthy salmon dinner. 

The dish I ordered was called salmon criollo. This was broiled salmon that was served on a bed of stewed black beans with cubes of baked butternut squash strewn around it. Chipotle crema came with the salmon and two warmed soft corn tortillas. 

 A pickled radish slice and sliced jalapeño sat on top of the broiled salmon with its ashed crust of broiled skin. (Maybe a kitchen blow torch was used to make the skin this way.) 

I placed slices of salmon in one tortilla along with the black beans, jalapeño, and butternut squash along with some chipotle cream. I twisted the end over once so my salmon taco would not leak out the end. 

I just loved the flavor trio provided by the squash, beans, and maize (corn) that is indigenous to the American Southwest and Mexico. The salmon indigenous to the Pacific Northwest of the US is very good, too.  The salmon and the beans, squash, and maize together provide protein and other important nutrients like selenium for thyroid health, Vitamin C, and antioxidants that remove cancer causing free radicals.

I used the second tortilla to do practically the same combination but used the pickled radish slice in this taco. The pungent radish made the savory ingredients seem fresh rather than cooked and gave it the plus of providing a fermented food to the taco. 

I ate the remaining black beans, butternut squash, and salmon with equal gusto with the remaining chipotle cream. 

The salmon criollo was delicious and might appeal to diners trying to maintain weight without sacrificing flavor.

The Kimpton Mirador Hotel in Pacific, Grove, California is now open!

This luxury destination is located in the center of a historic downtown with restaurants like The Spotted Duck French Restaurant located in the hotel, bakeries like longstanding Pavel’s, and the curated Grove Market offering many delectable goodies.  

The Museum of Natural History behind the hotel invites browsing with ocean views.  A nearby park and gazebo provide space for relaxed walks and poetry writing and journaling.  There are many flowers, trees, and hedges to identify for garden strolling.  (Safe, well-maintained parks should be a priority for all cities.  Some parks even provide picnic tables which diners and writers alike can use.)  The Kimpton has a courtyard as well for relaxing in the sun.

Asilomar Beach which runs along the rocky coastline that makes one think of Japan is three blocks downhill.  Brown pelicans, cormorants, seagulls, and great white egrets can all be seen flying here often in v-formation as they dive for fish as a group.  Photographers can take beautiful sunset photos from all vantage points along Asilomar Beach.

Pacific Grove is called Butterfly Town due the yearly migration of monarch butterflies that come to the town.  A monarch butterfly sanctuary and museum is located near the hotel .

Sometimes you can see seals sunning themselves on the rocks along Asilomar Beach to make walks true eco-tourism.

The nearby public library is a historic Carnegie library.  The town’s Chautauqua Hall hosts a quilt show every year.

First Friday Art Fair in Salinas, California on June 5, 2026 by Ruth Paget

The First Friday Art Fair in Salinas, California featuring gallery walks, food, and music will take place on Friday, June 5, 2026 downtown.  There is street parking, a parking garage, and some lots.

Wear your tech med as you stroll to shape your legs and lungs into shape.

There are two farmers’ markets happening on Friday as well beginning in the afternoon and ending at 9 pm, if you want to make First Friday into a daylong outing.
